When one of the local trees life comes to an end, either by natural causes or by urban reclamation, that is when my work begins. First we have the tree cut to a reasonable length for milling (usually between 8 and 12 feet, but the mill can oblige any trunk length). Next the log is specially positioned so that the orientation of the slab lumber will accurately portray the true strength, breadth, and depth of the wood grain. After that the log is usually debarked, and a straight edge is attached to the top to give a nice even first cut. Slabs are milled using an Alaskan Chainsaw Mill. This style of mill is highly regarded for being portable so I am able to go to the location of the tree and not transport the log to the mill. It also allows me to enjoy my time where the tree spent its entire life, giving me insight into the trees past. Often my whole family joins me and we make an adventure out of the experience.
Once everything is set, the fun begins. The first cut is my favorite part of the entire woodworking process. When the saw has made a complete pass and you open the tree up for the first time, the result always excites me beyond words. It is like uncovering a natural treasure unlike any other. After the slab is made my job becomes clear: make a piece of furniture with it that is as unobtrusive as possible with total respect for the tree. It is of the utmost importance for me to maintain the live feeling of the wood.
Depending on the style of the client, a choice is made and the actual construction and joinery then takes place. I often use local tree branches for doweling because they blend in with the actual knots of the timber and are often mistaken for the wood itself. In this way the furniture can flow unobstructed and hold true to its native origin. My preference for finishes are water-based or natural oils and I almost exclusively choose not to stain the wood so that the true color may be admired. That being said, I am capable of producing whatever finish the client desires. After the piece is finished, it is then hand delivered and photographed. Each piece of furniture is unique and is intended to be of heirloom quality. It is built to last for generations. I stand by my work, and guarantee your satisfaction.
